Isabelle viaja com a namorada até Saint-Étienne, uma pequena localidade quase abandonada, para visitar os pais. Ao chegar, descobre que o pai morreu há poucos dias e que já foi enterrado – sem que ninguém se tenha dado ao trabalho de lhe contar. As explicações vagas da mãe e do tio levantam ainda mais perguntas, sobretudo quando Isabelle começa a reparar no comportamento estranho da mãe e em transformações inexplicáveis no seu corpo. A presença do Dr. Hubert, que afirma ter encontrado uma cura milagrosa para doenças e dores extremas, parece estar ligada ao segredo que a família tenta esconder. Realizado por Raymond St-Jean, Veins é um body horror de mistério com ecos de Lovecraft e Cronenberg, sobre luto, transformação e a dificuldade de aceitar a morte. Estreado mundialmente no Black Nights Film Festival, é um daqueles filmes que nos lembra que, às vezes, a família devia simplesmente atender o telefone.
Isabelle travels with her girlfriend to Saint-Étienne, a small, almost abandoned town, to visit her parents. Upon arriving, she discovers that her father died a few days earlier and has already been buried — without anyone bothering to tell her. Her mother and uncle’s vague explanations only raise more questions, especially when Isabelle begins to notice her mother’s strange behaviour and unexplained changes in her body. The presence of Dr Hubert, who claims to have discovered a miraculous cure for extreme illnesses and pain, appears to be connected to the secret the family is trying to hide. Directed by Raymond St-Jean, Veins is a Lovecraftian- and Cronenberg-inflected body horror mystery about grief, transformation and the difficulty of accepting death. Premiering at the Black Nights Film Festival, it is one of those films that reminds us that sometimes your family should simply answer the phone.
